Botanical name - Barleria prionitis
Description - Spiny shrub, reaching a height of 6.6-16.6 cm, very prickly; stem profusely branched, densely scabrid; leaves opposite, simple, petioles of the lower ieaves may grow up to 2.5 cm; flowers axillary, bracteate, bracts foliaceous, yellow or orange or cream-coloured, funnel-shaped, may be 5 cm long; capsules 1.8-2.5 cm, 2-seeded.
Chemical_Constituents- Roots contain acylated luteolin-7-O-Beta-D- glucoside, fatty acids. Stem contains sterols, fatty acids. Flowers contain flavone glycoside scutellerein 7-neohesperidoside, and its glucoside. Whole plant contains iridoids (1-111). Leaves and stems contain iridoids barlerin and acetylbarlerin
Uses - Roots are used in dropsy, cough and anasarea. Applied externally as paste to disperse boils and glandular swellings. Uses : A paste of roots applied to boils and glandular swellings. Roots febrifuge. Leaves chewed to relieve toothache. Juice of leaves with honey given in catarrhal affections in children. AGNI PURANA : a medicine for leprosy can be obtained by mixing the blue variety of this plant with powder of all the five parts of Psoralea corylifolia and decoction of Acacia catechu;
